The CAEA-DOE Executive Steering Committee on Radiological Source Security held in Beijing

On May 29, Yang Dazhu, Director General of the Department of International Cooperation of CAEA met with Andrew James Bienia Wski, Associate Deputy Administrator of NNSA, US DOE, and co-chaired the CAEA-DOE executive steering committee on radiological sources security cooperation.

Both sides reviewed and fully recognized the substantial cooperation in Olympic nuclear security over the past year and exchanged views on next-step cooperation. The US side expressed willingness to share experiences with China in terms of searching and recovering radiological sources in the wake of natural disaster.

Over the past one year, the two sides had cooperated on physical protection upgrading of 11 facilities which used radiological sources in Beijing, Tianjin and Qingdao, and collected 32,000 curies of sources in 27 sites. The US side also donated equipment worth of 6 million us dollars to China. All these cooperative activities had greatly contributed to the strengthening of nuclear security for Beijing Olympics. The trainings and equipment provided by the US side also played an important role in the sources searching and recovering in Sichuan earthquake disaster relief efforts.
