[[News from CAEA] On 18 February 2004, Mr. Zhang Huazhu, Chairman of the China Atomic Energy Authority, met with Mr. Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat, Secretary General of Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and Chairman of the Third Preparatory Meeting of the 2005 NPT Review Conference.
Mr. Sujadnan briefly introduced the preparation work for the Third Preparatory Meeting which will be held in New York in April. He expected an early resolution from the six-party talks concerning the issue of DPRK, and an active role of the Chinese delegation in the discussion of this issue in the Third Preparatory Meeting. He also made a briefing on the status quo of nuclear energy application for peaceful purposes and the prospect of nuclear power development in Indonesia.
Mr. Zhang appreciated Sujadnan’s views and briefed him on China’s non-proliferation policies. He emphasized that China always stick to the international non-proliferation commitment. The Additional Protocol to Safeguards singed between China and IAEA took effect in early 2002, which is the first among nuclear powers. Letters have been sent to the Chairman of NSG and the Director General of IAEA, stating China’s wish to accede to NSG. All this demonstrated China’s effective support to the international non-proliferation regime and safeguards of IAEA.
Mr. Zhang said that both China and Indonesia are large developing countries and are facing with the challenge of energy supply. China has accumulated experience of nuclear power construction with efforts of 20 years. The prospect is promising for the two countries to cooperate in nuclear power and nuclear technology applications. Sujadnan said he would convey the message to the Atomic Energy Agency of Indonesia.
