On June 1, 2009, CAEA Secretary General Mr. Wang Yiren met with the IAEA DDG Mr. Olli Heinonen. Both sides had in-depth exchange of views on nuclear cooperation in a sincere and friendly atmosphere.

Mr. Wang said, the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Energy in 21st Century held recently in Beijing had attracted wide attention and strong support from the IAEA and its member states. The Conference had made complete success and reached relevant consensus, which is of practical significance for promoting global rapid development of nuclear energy while ensuring peaceful purposes. Mr. Wang pointed out that the Chinese Government attached great importance to nuclear safeguards, strictly abided by its non-proliferation obligations and established a complete nuclear safeguards, nuclear material management and nuclear export control system. China also had actively carried out cooperation with IAEA, for example, by joining IAEA Member States Support Program. China would like to expand cooperation with IAEA in the areas mentioned above.

Mr. Heinonen said, IAEA was faced with challenges in various fields, such as environment sampling analysis capability, providing training to member states, development of instruments, and information technology application. He hoped that China could provide more support in this regard.

Mr. Wang said that China had always supported the IAEA to fulfill its missions prescribed under the Statute and in light of the international non-proliferation situation. China was ready to strengthen cooperation with IAEA in joint efforts to address challenges in the area of nuclear non-proliferation.
