On May 7, 2009, Secretary General Mr. Wang Yiren met with the ANS delegation led by Mr. W. Burchill. Both sides had in-depth exchange of views on China-US nuclear cooperation in a friendly and sincere atmosphere.
Mr. Wang said that both countries had conducted fruitful cooperation in the nuclear field since 1985, including in nuclear technology, nuclear safety, nuclear security, and non-proliferation. The nuclear cooperation between both sides entered a new phase, particularly witnessed by the recent initiation of construction of the Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant, which adopted the AP1000 technology. He hoped that nuclear societies of both sides could serve as the bridge between industry and the government, and contribute to the common development of nuclear energy of both China and the US.
Mr. Wang pointed out that China attached great importance to the environment, personnel safety, non-proliferation, and needs of nuclear power development when developing its nuclear fuel cycle industry. With years of development, China had put in place a fairly complete nuclear fuel cycle system, stringent management and supervision over nuclear material and facilities. China also joined global major nuclear non-proliferation mechanisms and had maintained a good non-proliferation record. In the recent International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear in the 21st Century, Vice Premier of the State Council Mr. Zhang Dejiang reiterate China’s stand on issues related nuclear non-proliferation, receiving high commendation from the international community.
