The International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Energy in 21st Century was held in Beijing International Conference Center from 20-22, April, 2009. Over 20 ministers presented their national nuclear energy policy and discussed on international nuclear energy issues. 442 official representatives from 68 countries and 8 international organizations and other 365 observers attended the Conference.
Vice Premier of the State Council of China Mr. Zhang Dejiang, IAEA Director General Dr. M. Elbaradei, OECD Secretary General Mr. A. Gurria attended the Conference and delivered remarks. Minister of MIIT, Mr. Li Yizhong assumed the president of the Conference. CAEA Chairman, Mr. Chen Qiufa made a topical presentation.
The Conference included four sessions: opening ceremony, national presentations, technical session and closing ceremony. National presentations were made by ministers and high-level delegates. The technical session covered topics of common interest, such as energy resources and environment, infrastructure for nuclear power development, available nuclear power technology and prospects as well as fuel supply and waste management. A theme exhibition “World Nuclear Energy” sponsored by CAEA was held at the same venue.
During the Conference, CAEA also signed a Joint Statement with IAEA, a nuclear energy cooperation protocol with France CEA, and held bilateral talks with several countries.
An approved chairman statement was presented at the closing ceremony.
The Conference atracted a large number of well-known nuclear energy organizations from home and abroad. In addition to IAEA and OECD, OECD/NEA, OECD/IEA, AAEA, ISTC, PAEC, WONUC also sent delegations to the meeting. Over 100 Chinese organizations, research institutes, enterprises and universities involving in the nuclear field, such as CNNC, CNEC, CGNPC, CPI, SNPTC, China Huaneng Group, China Datang group, etc. sent official representatives and observers to the Conference.
