CAEA donated detection equipment for nuclear security to Olympic Games

[CAEA Netnews] On January 18, 2008, CAEA donated the first batch of detection equipment for nuclear security to the Olympic Security Office of Ministry of Public Security.

Pursuant to the Nuclear Security Cooperation Arrangement between CAEA and IAEA, both sides had carried out a range of activities with regard to nuclear security for Beijing Olympics. IAEA has provided to China a batch of radioactive detectors and isotopes identifiers to China, greatly enhancing China’s capability in detecting nuclear terrorist attacks.

At the beginning of the donation ceremony, Mr. Yang Dazhu, Director General of CAEA Department of International Cooperation, introduced China’s cooperation activities with IAEA and US DOE concerning nuclear security for the Beijing Olympics. Mr. Yang said CAEA will make full uses of the international cooperation platform available to obtain more support in forms of personnel training and equipment for domestic nuclear security work.

Mr. Wu Mingshan, Director General of the Olympics Security Office of Ministry of Public Security expressed thanks for the support of CAEA. Mr. Wu stated that nuclear security work for the Olympic Games was a severe challenge and the donated detection equipment would effectively beef up Olympic security capabilities. Mr. Wu said he hoped to receive strong support from CAEA in terms of technology, equipment and experts in the future.

Mr. Xu Ping, Deputy Director General of System Engineering of CAEA, Mr. Duan Daqi, Deputy Director General of Olympics Security Office of Ministry of Public Security and representative from China Institute of Atomic Energy were present at the ceremony.

Mr. Wu and his colleagues also visited CAEA Nuclear Emergency Response Center.
