Sun Qin met with Dr. El Baradei, Secretary General of IAEA

(CAEA Net News), On December 6, 2006, Chairman of CAEA, Mr. Sun Qin met with the visiting Dr. El Baradei, Secretary General of IAEA. The two sides exchanged views on issues of mutual concerns including multilateral nuclear fuel cycle and strengthening cooperation on non-proliferation, etc.

Mr. Sun QIn expressed warm welcome for the visit of Dr. Baradei. He said, IAEA has been attaching importance to the relationship with China. The two sides have sound cooperation in international nuclear affairs in particular on issues of key concerns. China is thankful for the support of IAEA on China’s peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Mr. Sun Qin hoped that IAEA could continue to deepen the cooperation with China, and China is also ready to continue the support for IAEA.

Dr.Baradei expressed his pleasure to visit China and believed that the cooperation between China and IAEA would go deeper continuously. He said that the proportion of China’s nuclear power in the total national power generation will increase from the current level of 1% to 4%, but China still had a long way to go to reach the world average level of 16%. He hoped that there would be great development for China’s nuclear power and greater independency of China’s energy. He believed that China’s joining in the Nuclear Safety Network Laboratory is helpful for improving its nuclear security. He hoped China would further strengthen human resources, strengthen nuclear supervision and nuclear security. He also expressed willingness of keeping contact and cooperation with China in terms of security work for 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 Shanghai Expo.
